Is Sleep Apnea And Parkinson’s Connected?

Researchers have been studying if there is a scientific connection between sleep apnea and Parkinson’s. According to an article in Science Direct, “The prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Parkinson’s disease patients is higher than general population. Comorbidity Obstructive Sleep Apnea can exacerbate both motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease patients. Bedtime dopamine sustained-release dosage and non-ergot dopamine agonists may improve Obstructive Sleep Apnea symptoms.”

In a recent study published in Science Direct, Obstructive Sleep Apnea was observed in 20–70% of patients with Parkinson’s disease, in contrast, the general population exhibits a lower range from 2 to 14%. Given the adverse effects of Parkinson’s comorbid with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, early intervention measures are crucial. An important article to read.
